Abstract:

Virtual international groups and teams are becoming part and parcel of our everyday lives. The current COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized more than ever that virtual groups and teams are playing an increasingly central function that allow us to continue working, teaching and functioning locally and internationally during times crisis and uncertainty. Large companies as well as small startups are based on virtual groups, may this be in the gaming industry, the car industry, the medical industry, or any other industry. Thus, there is no question that virtual teams and groups are becoming part and parcel of our lives. While technology is developing daily, allowing us to create and manage such virtual groups, we still know very little how to create them, how to maintain them and how to manage them. Moreover, despite the technological sophistication and the capabilities of the team members, virtual teams often fail to meet their envisioned potential.

People in virtual teams do not necessarily know each other. Especially when people are based in different cultures and backgrounds, questions such as trust building, leadership, local culture, and behavioral norms, play an important role in the ability to build and maintain virtual groups that are able to work together in an effective way in the international arena. So far, research on virtual international teams and groups has examined short-term projects and task related effectiveness within large organizations. In this research project we will focus processes that involve not only specific tasks or projects but long-term operations of virtual international teams, groups and even organizations or communities while examining how this topic is evolving, what role trust building plays and how virtuality affects the efficacy of group work.
